🍮 Chem Brûlée – Pheno B
Week 9 | She May Not Be the Greenest… But She's Bulking Beautifully
Welcome back to another chapter of the 8×8 Adventure! 💚🌱
And this week, Chem Brûlée Pheno B has a slightly different story to tell.
She's not the greenest girl in the room.
She's not carrying that deep, lush green that I absolutely love seeing on a flowering plant.
But...
she's still growing.
She's still building.
She's still producing beautiful flowers.
And she's still showing us exactly why growing multiple phenotypes together is so fascinating.
Sometimes a plant doesn't give you the picture you expected.
Sometimes she gives you a question.
And the best thing we can do is listen.
🌿 A Quick Look Back
Chem Brûlée Pheno B has always been one of the more distinctive expressions of this genetic line.
Compared with her sister, Pheno A, she's taller, more elongated and more open.
She has developed a very different architecture, with flowering sites distributed along those longer branches rather than creating the more compact structure we've seen from Pheno A.
Last week, she received some selective defoliation to open the canopy and give the developing flowers a little more room.
And I'm happy to say:
she handled it well.
There was no dramatic reaction.
No major setback.
She simply continued doing what she does.
Growing.
Flowering.
And now...
bulking. 🌸
🍃 Not the Greenest Girl in the Room
Let's talk about the obvious thing first.
Her foliage isn't showing the deep, rich green that I personally like to see.
It's a little lighter.
And when you're looking at twelve different genetics growing under essentially the same conditions, those differences become very easy to notice.
Especially when one plant is standing right beside another phenotype that may be carrying a completely different shade of green.
But here's the important part:
I'm not going to invent a problem just because I don't love the colour.
She's still growing.
She's still producing flowers.
She's still developing.
She's still responding to the environment.
And that's why we're observing rather than immediately changing everything around her.
Could this phenotype simply have a different nutritional demand?
Absolutely.
Could genetics be contributing to the way she presents?
Of course.
Could other environmental factors play a role?
Potentially.
But the whole-plant picture matters much more than one characteristic.
And right now, her whole-plant picture says:
"I'm still working."
So we're listening.
Twelve Genetics Don't Get Twelve Different Worlds
This is one of the things I really want to emphasize in this project.
We're running a lot of plants.
Twelve different genetic stories.
More than twenty plants in total.
And they're sharing the same room, the same general environmental conditions, the same irrigation philosophy and the same reservoir.
That means we can't look at every single plant and say:
"Okay, you want something different? Let's completely redesign the grow just for you."
That's not the experiment.
The whole point is consistency.
We provide the same foundation...
and then we watch how the genetics respond.
Some plants are more demanding.
Some are more relaxed.
Some stay dark green.
Some are naturally lighter.
Some stretch.
Some stay compact.
Some drink more.
Some drink less.
And some...
like Chem Brûlée Pheno B...
simply keep telling us:
"I'm going to do this my way." 😂
And honestly?
That's exactly what I want to see.
🌸 But Look at Those Flowers...
Because while the foliage may not be giving me the lush green I'm looking for...
the flowers are giving me plenty to smile about.
She's bulking.
The developing flowers are becoming increasingly substantial, and those long branches are now carrying some beautiful flower structures.
The pistils remain prominent, while the buds are gaining volume and definition.
This is one of those stages where you can really see the plant transitioning from:
"I'm flowering."
to:
"I'm building flowers."
And that difference is huge.
We're no longer just watching flowering sites appear.
We're watching them develop.
We're watching them gain substance.
We're watching the plant put her energy behind the flowers that she's already created.
And Pheno B is doing exactly that.
❄️ The Frost Is Coming Along
The resin development is also becoming increasingly noticeable.
When you get close with the camera, the flowers start revealing another layer of the story.
The sugar leaves are becoming increasingly frosty, and the developing flowers are starting to take on that beautiful sparkling appearance that makes macro photography so addictive.
From a distance, you see:
a flowering plant.
From close up, you see:
an entire little universe.
That's something I never get tired of.
And Chem Brûlée Pheno B is giving us some beautiful subjects to photograph this week.
✂️ How Did She Handle the Defoliation?
Pretty well.
And that's worth documenting.
Last week, we gave her a selective cleanup.
Nothing extreme.
We removed foliage where it made sense, particularly where leaves were contributing to unnecessary shading or crowding.
The objective wasn't to strip her.
It was simply to open the architecture she'd already created.
And now, looking at her this week, I like the result.
The structure is easier to see.
The flowers are easier to appreciate.
And she's continued developing without missing a beat.
That's a good reminder that intervention should always have a reason behind it.
We're not defoliating because:
"It's Tuesday and apparently Tuesday is defoliation day." 😂
We're doing it when the plant and the canopy give us a reason.
🌿 Her Architecture Is Doing the Work
One of the things I really like about Pheno B is her naturally open structure.
She's around 130 cm, making her taller than her Chem Brûlée sister, but she's not just tall for the sake of being tall.
She's created a very different architecture.
Longer branches.
More vertical growth.
Flowering sites distributed through that structure.
And now, as those flowers bulk up, you can really start appreciating what she built earlier in the run.
The plant has already made her decisions.
Now she's investing in them.
And that's why I'm not interested in forcing her to look like Pheno A.
They're sisters.
They're not twins.
👃 The Story Is Still Developing
The aromatic profile is also something I'm continuing to watch.
At this stage, I don't want to pretend that the final terpene expression has arrived.
We're still watching the flowers mature.
But that's part of the fun.
With phenotypes growing beside each other under the same conditions, these subtle differences can become incredibly interesting as flowering progresses.
The structure is different.
The foliage expression is different.
The flowering architecture is different.
And eventually, the aroma may give us another piece of the puzzle.
So for now...
I'm simply taking notes.
Watching.
Photographing.
And waiting.
⚗️ Feeding – Consistency Is Part of the Experiment
The feeding strategy remains consistent across the room.
We're continuing with:
🌱 Plagron Terra Bloom – 2.2 ml/L
🌱 Plagron Green Sensation – 1 ml/L
🌱 Plagron Power Buds – 1 ml/L
🌱 Plagron Sugar Royal – 1 ml/L
With Lemon Kick / pH Plus used as required.
The current readings are approximately:
⚗️ pH – 6.0
⚡ EC – 2.0 mS/cm
And this is where the philosophy of the 8×8 Adventure really matters.
Pheno B may be one of the girls that appears to demand more.
But we're not going to create a completely separate feeding world for her while running a shared system with the rest of the room.
Instead, we're watching how she adapts.
We're looking at the plant.
We're looking at the flowers.
We're looking at the new growth.
And we're looking at the progression over time.
Because one photograph tells you what the plant looks like today.
A diary tells you how she got there.
🌡️ The Environment
The room continues running with remarkably consistent conditions:
🌡️ Day temperature – 29°C
🌙 Night temperature – 25°C
💧 Relative humidity – 60%
🌱 Substrate temperature – 26°C
💦 Solution temperature – 25°C
⚗️ pH – approximately 6.0
⚡ EC – approximately 2.0 mS/cm
💨 CO₂ – 639 ppm
💡 Light schedule – 12/12
? Pot size – 15 L
💧 Watering – approximately 1.3 L/plant/24h
And once again, this consistency is important.
The environment isn't changing dramatically from plant to plant.
So when we see differences...
the genetics become increasingly interesting.
That's the experiment.
💡 Same Light. Different Plant.
The lighting setup continues providing strong overhead illumination, with additional light reaching the inner and lower portions of the canopy.
And this phenotype's more open structure works nicely with that arrangement.
She's got flowers distributed throughout the plant rather than packed into one dense wall.
The selective cleanup has also made some of those structures easier to see.
And when you look at the photographs...
there's a lot happening.
She's not finished.
She's not even close.
But she's definitely building.
📸 Behind the Lens
This week was another reminder of why I love photographing this project.
When I look at Pheno B with my eyes, the first thing I notice is the lighter foliage.
But when I put the camera close to the flowers...
that's not what I see anymore.
I see structure.
I see pistils.
I see developing resin.
I see flowers getting bigger.
I see branches carrying more weight.
And I see a phenotype becoming increasingly recognizable.
That's one of the reasons I try not to judge a plant from one characteristic.
Step back...
look at the whole plant.
Then get close...
and look at the flowers.
Sometimes the story changes completely.
🌿 She's Adapting
And that's probably my favourite part of this week's update.
She's adapting.
She's not necessarily giving us the exact expression I would choose.
She's not the deepest green.
She's one of the more demanding plants in the room.
But she's adapting to the environment we've created.
And she's continuing to grow.
That matters.
Because the purpose of this project isn't to prove that every phenotype behaves identically.
It's almost the opposite.
We're giving them the same stage...
and watching how differently they perform on it.
Chem Brûlée Pheno B is showing us:
"This is how I play the game."
And I'm listening.
🔮 Looking Ahead
So what am I expecting from her next?
More bulking.
More flower definition.
More resin.
And hopefully an increasingly obvious expression of what this phenotype is capable of.
I'm also going to continue watching the foliage carefully.
Not panicking.
Not ignoring it.
Just watching.
If the plant continues developing flowers beautifully while maintaining functional foliage and healthy growth, that's valuable information.
If other signs begin appearing alongside the colour change, then we'll have another conversation.
For now...
the flowers are telling a very positive story.
And I'm going to let her keep writing it.
🍮 Different Isn't Bad
This is something I've learned over and over again throughout this adventure.
When you grow one plant by itself, you can easily assume that whatever you see is simply the plant.
But when you grow twelve genetics together?
Suddenly you have references everywhere.
One plant is dark green.
Another is lighter.
One stretches.
Another stays compact.
One produces enormous leaves.
Another produces completely different foliage.
One drinks aggressively.
Another is more conservative.
And then you have Chem Brûlée Pheno B.
She's somewhere in there saying:
"I'm going to make beautiful flowers while making you think about my foliage." 😂
And honestly...
fair enough.
That's what phenotype hunting is about.
🌱 She's Not Perfect. She's Interesting.
And maybe that's the best way to describe her this week.
She's not perfect.
Her green isn't the lush colour I personally love.
She's demanding.
She's different.
But she's also beautiful.
She's adapting.
She's continuing to grow.
She's bulking.
She's producing flowers.
She's building frost.
And she's telling us a story that is completely her own.
I wouldn't want to erase that.
Because if every plant behaved exactly the same...
there wouldn't be much of a phenotype hunt, would there?
💚 Let Her Shine
So this week, I'm not going to compare Chem Brûlée Pheno B to the greenest girl in the room.
I'm not going to compare her to her sister and ask why she isn't built the same.
I'm going to look at her.
At approximately 130 cm...
with her elongated structure...
her developing flowers...
her increasing frost...
her lighter foliage...
and her unmistakable personality...
she's doing her thing.
And she's doing it beautifully.
The flowers are getting bigger.
The structure is becoming more impressive.
The resin is building.
And the plant is still moving forward.
That's enough for me.
Sometimes the most interesting plants aren't the ones that give you exactly what you expected.
They're the ones that make you stop...
look...
and say:
"Okay, girl. Show me what you've got." 🍮🔥
