Ok, you asked about defoliation... I don't happen to think it's necessary at all at the moment... and it may NEVER be necessary. If you're concerned right now, you could simply take those large fan leaves and tuck them under the bud sites that they may be shading. You want to do defoliation for a REASON... either to get more air flow into your plant or to get more light to the lower portions of your plant.
